Education of Immigrants in the Greek Language, the Greek History and the Greek Culture

The “Education of immigrants in the Greek language, the Greek history and the Greek culture – ODYSSEUS” programme aims at providing the language skills, as well as the social and intercultural competences required for the social inclusion of the participants and their families.

The Educational Programme offers the following levels: Α1 (course length - 125 hours), Α2 (course length - 175 hours), Β1 (course length - 185 hours) and Β1 in which emphasis is laid on speaking skills (course length - 195 hours).

The Educational Programme is structured in four (4) levels.

Level Α1: It aims at beginners and false beginners. False beginners are those who do not acquire all the language skills of the Greek language (language understanding/production of oral/written word). Usually, the false beginners are able to talk (understanding & production), thanks to their daily social contact, but they are unable to write (understanding & production).   

Content: Introductory courses in Greek language, history and culture, as well as in the lifestyle of the Greek society. The learners develop their linguistic skills but also useful social skills, in order to deal with communication situations of everyday life and familiarise with the social environment, history and culture of the country.

Topic: The Greek language and the sociocultural dimension of its cultural elements. 

Course length: 125 hours

Level Α2: It aims at beginners who acquire all the language skills of the Greek language.

Content: Courses on Greek language, history and culture.

Topics: This particular level offers two (2) topics: Greek language courses of 160 hours' length and Greek history and culture elements of 50 hours' length.

Course length: 175 hours

Level Β1: The candidate is able to act in an autonomous and effective way under common communication circumstances. At this level, the learner -who has successfully completed the level A2 and is well aware of the living conditions and the social conventions governing various activities- he will be trained to a higher level of comprehension and production of written and oral word, thanks to which he will be able to meet situations like ordinary transactions of everyday life that require the use of highly stable linguistic structures.

Topics: This particular level offers two (2) topics: Greek language courses of 160 hours' length and Greek history and culture elements of 50 hours' length.

Course length: 185 hours

Level B1, with emphasis on speaking skills: The development of speaking skills, (i.e.    comprehension and production of oral word) meet the daily communication needs of the target group (adult immigrants), when this group comes in contact with  the native speakers of modern Greek in the host country (Greece). The learner is trained on communication activities, in order to be able to understand the main topic of radio and television shows, to spontaneously participate in a conversation on subjects which directly affect his life (family, work, hobbies, travel/transport, news)   and express his experiences, views, needs, desires and goals. At this level of knowledge of the Greek language, the learner must also acquire basic knowledge of history, culture and sociopolitical organisation of the host country (Greece). The certification of this knowledge can be also performed through an oral exam.

Course length: 195 hours

The classes are held in every regional unit of the country and are free of charge.

The programme “Odysseus” forms part of the Operational Programme Education and Lifelong Learning of the Ministry of Education,Research and Religious Affairs and it is co-funded by the European Union (European Social Fund) and National Funding.

Who can apply?

✓       The programme is targeted at EU citizens and third-country nationals irrespective of origin, aged 16 and above, who are legally resident in Greece.

✓       Any person interested in joining the classes, should complete an application form (it is provided in Greek & English) which is submitted to the Education Officer of the Region-Sector of the Programme, along with a photocopy of the residence permit & passport (their validation is not necessary).

✓       The educational material is distributed to the participants under the programme’s responsibility and is entirely free of charge.

•       After successful completion of each level, the trainees may participate in the respective Greek language exams (which are conducted twice a year under the General Secretariat for Lifelong Learning, of the Ministry of Education, Research and Religious Affairs). •       Apart from their main educational purpose, the classes aim to develop the trainee’s competences necessary for the certification of knowledge of the Greek language, history and culture. This knowledge will facilitate both the effective social inclusion and the lingua-cultural competence required for the certification exams. Finally, the educational process is based on a standard certification system relating to the recognition of the political and social rights of the trainee (e.g. the long-term resident status).
